Hard or Wrong. A decision framework by Terry Rice.

Are you living by drift, drive, or design?

Some things are hard because they’re worth it. Some are hard because they’re wrong, and from the inside they feel identical. The test tells you which one you’re holding: 3 questions, about 2 minutes, and you know whether to keep going or walk away.

// Drift / Drive / Design

The opposite of drifting isn’t driving. It’s designing.

Drift

Drift avoids decisions.

Life happening to you. Unconscious continuation. Momentum impersonating intention. Nothing is wrong, and nothing is chosen either.

Drive

Drive forces decisions.

Direction, with your identity tied to proving something. “I just need to work harder.” Drive is what gets you out of Drift. It is a real step, not the villain.

Design

Design makes decisions.

Consciously choosing the life you are building, and adjusting as you go.

Drift avoids decisions. Drive forces decisions. Design makes decisions.

Discernment is the skill.
Hard or Wrong is how you build it.

Skill is not the scarce part any more, and neither is effort. Everyone around you works hard, and now they have the same tools you do. What separates one year from another is what all of it got spent on, and almost nobody is taught how to decide that. Once you can tell the two apart, you cannot go back to not knowing.

Terry Rice on stage

Terry Rice is a keynote speaker and creator of the Hard or Wrong decision framework.

He got sober, rebuilt, and learned the hard way that working harder is not the same as choosing well. Faculty at NYU and General Assembly, formerly Meta and Adobe, based in Brooklyn. He teaches this to rooms stuck on a big call, and they leave running it without him.

// Where it came from

One night after a rough day I sat my son down and gave him the cleanest advice I had. Do the next right thing. The right thing is almost always obvious, it is usually the hard one, and you already know what it is, so do it.

I believed it completely. Getting sober, rebuilding, every good thing in my life had come from doing the obvious hard thing when I did not feel like it.

I was proud of that speech for a few days. Then it started to bother me, because it was not quite true, and I had handed him a version of the truth with a piece missing.

Some things are hard because they are worth doing. Some things are hard because you are doing them the wrong way, or they were never yours to do. The hardness feels identical either way. I had given him a hammer and taught him to see nails.

The test is what I built so he could tell the difference. It is the thing I teach from stages now.
